Feedback Rich Model Construction with Powersim Studio

This workshop will be an introduction to building system dynamics models using Powersim Studio. The workshop is intended for people who are relatively new to the field or do not have experience using Studio. The session will be conducted as a hands-on workshop and will demonstrate basic techniques for building and analyzing, stock and flow diagrams and simple simulation models. It will also point out some of the advanced Studio features such as arrays, user interface tools, VB scripting, and the powerful Studio interactive development environment (IDE). Sample models will be available. A free version of Studio with no expiration can be obtained at: https://powersim.com/downloads/ In addition a free 30 day license with complete functionality can be found at https://powersim.com/downloads/. Remember DO NOT INSTALL this 30 day version more than 30 days before the workshop!

Starting from scratch: Better model construction

An introduction to model construction. This is not formulation, group model building, or testing. This is all about the process of using system dynamics software tools to create well built and robust simulations. We will examine the quality of model construction, personal processes that will improve modeling skill, and criteria for checking the 'well built' attribute of system dynamics models. The workshop is intended for people who are relatively new to the field, have encountered models that can't be understood, or do not have considerable modeling experience. Sample models will be available.

  • Services Offered

    Consulting Services

We offer both in-house consulting as well as partnering on proposals and external projects.

    Modeling

We have experience in a wide variety of areas including business management, environmental, energy and water. We can work with your domain experts to develop simulations that can be to test drive your system to understand impacts of changes.

    Model Validation and Verification

It can be invaluable to have someone who is independent review and assess your models and data under the strict confidenentiality. We can review your models for "Best Practices", units consistency, model boundaries and performance.

    Experience

    Jake Jacobson

    Owner, Statistician

Jake has a diverse background in system analysis including statistical analysis, data visualization and system dynamics. Jake previously was a group lead at the Idaho National Laboratory where he led a team of analysts that provided support for the lab in all areas including Biofuel Logistics, Nuclear Fuel Cycle, Energy Water Nexus, and Hybrid Energy Systems. Jake has over 30 publications in all areas of research and has been a consistent contributor to the International System Dynamics Conference. Jake has been been using System Dynamics for over 15 years. Prior to that he worked as a statistician developing statistical software and consulting on research projects. Jake has a variety of publications and model experience in biofuels, energy water nexus, hybrid energy and nuclear fuel cycle analysis. He is proficient in Powersim Studio, Vensim and Stella system dynamic software. Jake holds a BS in Mathematics, an MS in Statistics and has completed the Certification in System Dynamics from MIT.

    Len Malczynski

    Owner, Economist

Len is a system dynamics practitioner, micro-economist and software engineer. His specialties are in database modeling and system dynamics modeling. He has also worked on geographic information systems. He has built system dynamics models of the civilian nuclear fuel cycle, world energy consumption, bio-energy supplies, water basin management, workforce management, international conflict, and international migration. Many of these models were turned into applications. He was a member of the Office of the Chief Economist at Sandia National Laboratories from 1998-2005 and ended his career at the Laboratories in March 2017. His current activities involve being Vice President of Meetings of the System Dynamics Society, and Past President (2017), a software specialization in Powersim Studio, Group Moderator of the international Powersim Users Group, and development of software engineering techniques applicable to system dynamics modeling. Len has also taught information systems and microeconomics at the University of New Mexico since 1988. He is teaching two system dynamics courses at UNM starting Spring 2018. He has also taught several short courses in system dynamics and the use of Powersim Studio. Prior to 1988 he spent 10 years as an independent information systems consultant in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean.

    What our clients say

    • A big "thank you" to you and Len on your successful introduction to Powersim workshop. The applications discussed were most helpful in understanding how this product can be used to explain complex problems requiring systems thinking. I learned a lot and I also value the continued support you and Len have offered me in working through some first time uses of this powerful tool.

    • Jake Jacobson and Len Malczynski, the owners of Mindseye Computing, recently came to NM WRRI and taught an introductory workshop on the use of Powersim Studio. The ability of Powersim to characterize and project the behavior of complex systems is critical to my work, which is an ongoing effort to account for the origin and fate of New Mexico’s historical and future water supply. During the three-day workshop, Jake and Len shared their passion and expertise for Powersim and system dynamics with the thirteen participants. The highly interactive and hands-on structure of the workshop led participants to an improved understanding of the software and highlighted the use of some of the powerful functions within it.
